Since 1980, the Ateliers Varan - created following a first workshop in Mozambique initiated by Jean Rouch and Jacques d'Arthuys - has been training young documentary filmmakers from all over the world. The few radical principles around which Varan's pedagogy has evolved allow us to question the practice of a certain documentary cinema: a cinema that takes the risk of the field, is made with modest and accessible tools, is built in the relationship between filmer and filmed, and seeks to reveal the present of a reality in order to understand and caption it.
