In 1936, during the heyday of the Front Populaire, Jean Renoir began shooting Une Partie de campagne, a free adaptation of a short story by Guy de Maupassant. A number of important people were involved in the filming: Sylvia Bataille, Jane Marken, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Luchino Visconti, Brunius, Georges Bataille... And the photographer Eli Lotar, who brought back a series of photographs (most of them previously unpublished) that are hedonistic odes to the times, to pleasure and to creation. It was not until 1946 that the film was finally completed and shown, and then today that this book reveals Lotar's extraordinary photographic work on the set of this legendary film.
