The work of Walerian Borowczyk (1923 - 2006) is complex and multi-faceted - plastic, graphic, pictorial, cinematographic and literary - and is the subject of in-depth study for the first time. Based on the major Borowczyk collection at the Musée-Château d'Annecy (the only one of its kind in the world) and on the desire to decompartmentalize and bring into dialogue his Polish (1945-1958) and French (1959-2006) periods, the proposal is organized around a main text by Pascal Vimenet, which demonstrates the active fecundity of the work and its position in the postmodern field. This wide-open site, with its exceptional iconography, outlines a vision that challenges the simplistic clichés that have hitherto accompanied the work of “Boro”, to whom André Breton had attached the magnificent label of “dazzling imagination”, and whom Robert Benayoun had compared to those of Ionesco and Beckett.
