"If these notes are about reels coming into harmony, sound meeting image, it's because they were first written in the secrecy of the first Super 8 films. Many of them were written during the years spent in the closed valley. They should be read as an intimate love song."

Jean-Claude Rousseau has been making films since Jeune femme à sa fenêtre lisant une lettre (Young Woman at her Window Reading a Letter) in 1983 - first in Super 8, then in digital from Lettre à Roberto (2002) onwards.  A close friend of Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub, and winner of several awards at major festivals (Locarno, FidMarseille, Entrevues de Belfort, etc.), his work is personal, contemplative and moving, and has been shown at the Centre Pompidou, New York University, the Cinémathèque royale de Belgique and Le Fresnoy, among others.

His most important films include Keep in Touch (1987), Les Antiquités de Rome (1989) La Vallée close (1997) and De son appartement (2006).

At the same time, Jean-Claude Rousseau has been writing about cinema, nurturing a rich and demanding body of thought that links different practices.

Les Draps pliés du grand lit, a fascinating reflection on art, time and space, is made up of his ‘notes sur le cinématographe’.
